*Please note – the above time limits are a guide for teachers when choreographing routines. They are recommended, as adhering to these lengths will ensure that the day runs on time. Judges will also be able to fairly assess routines in the suggested times. Longer numbers only serve to tire the student and diminish their performance. If however, numbers are going to run past these time limits, please let The Ultimate Dance Connection know in advance so proper allotment of time can be scheduled.

IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT ANY REQUIRED SET UP TIME FOR PRODUCTION NUMBERS IS REQUESTED IN ADVANCE

CLASSIFICATIONS

NOVICE
Soloist – a student who has not competed in a solo before – may have danced in a Duet/Trio or Group
Duet/Trio – 100% of the dancers competing have not competed in a Solo, Duet/Trio before – may have danced in a Group
Group – must be comprised of 75% students who have not competed before

CONNECTION LEVEL ONE
Students who train for 5 or less hours a week. May have competed before.

CONNECTION LEVEL TWO
Students who train for 6 or more hours a week. May have competed before.

CONNECTION LEVEL THREE
Participants are considered professional. (receive payment for performing or teaching in excess of $3000 per year) Professionals may dance in a Connection Level Two category providing that 90% of the group is not deemed ‘professional’. Connection Level Three dancers are not eligible for overall awards.

DANCE DISCIPLINE DEFINITION

JAZZ
A dance incorporating jazz technique. General lifts are permissible. The routine must not contain more than 3 acro tricks.

TAP
A dance incorporating tap technique. The music must not have pre-recorded tap sounds.

LYRICAL
A dance incorporating jazz technique which expresses the mood and the emotion of the music. Movements which demonstrate control, balance, extension and flexibility should be incorporated. The routine must no contain more than 3 acro tricks.

HIP HOP
A dance incorporating hip hop and street technique.

ACRO
A routine incorporating acrobatic/gymnastic technique. The routine may also contain 50% of dance movements such as jazz technique.

MUSICAL THEATRE 1
A routine which portrays an idea, theme or character. Inspiration may be taken from a musical stage production, movie or television production. MUST INCLUDE LIVE VOCALS.

MUSICAL THEATRE 2
A routine which portrays an idea, theme or character. Inspiration may be taken from a musical stage production, movie or television production. DANCERS LIP SYNC TO THE MUSIC.

STUDENT CHOREOGRAPHY
A dance that has been created from inception to completion by a student,
without help from a teacher. It may contain technique from any dance form.

OPEN
A dance which does not fall into any of the above definition.
